This project involved a competitor analysis of Netflix to evaluate how leading streaming platforms support content discovery, personalization, and social viewing. Problem Statement :

With increasing competition in the streaming market, Netflix faces challenges in maintaining user engagement, improving content discovery, and differentiating its experience from competitors like Apple TV+ and Prime Video. The goal of this competitive analysis was to evaluate how these platforms approach navigation, personalization, and content discovery, and to identify opportunities for Netflix to strengthen its user experience.

Research Methodology :

  • Competitive Analysis: Conducted a structured feature comparison between Netflix, Apple TV+, and Prime Video focusing on navigation, personalization, search functionality, and content presentation.

  • Heuristic Evaluation: Assessed each platform using usability principles such as clarity, consistency, feedback, and efficiency.

  • Task-Based Review: Completed key user flows (browsing, searching, adding to watchlist, playback) across platforms to identify friction and strengths.

  • Experience Mapping: Compared emotional touchpoints during content discovery and decision-making.

Research Findings & Recommendations :

  • Content Discovery Overload (Netflix & Prime): Large content libraries increase decision fatigue.
    Recommendation: Introduce smarter filtering, mood-based categories, and more curated “quick decision” sections.

  • Strong Ecosystem Integration (Apple TV+): Seamless integration within the Apple ecosystem enhances continuity and personalization.
    Recommendation: Netflix could strengthen cross-device continuity and personalized onboarding experiences.

  • Navigation Complexity (Prime Video): Cluttered interface and mixed content types create confusion.
    Recommendation: Netflix should maintain its cleaner hierarchy while further simplifying category grouping.

  • Limited Contextual Decision Support: Across platforms, users want quicker ways to evaluate content (ratings, runtime, social proof).
